The summer provides a welcome rest from commuting, and my parents and Sam’s each visit us for a few weeks. Jason celebrates his fifth birthday and looks forward to starting kindergarten in the fall, and Liz will begin nursery school then. We take advantage of the summer weather to do some entertaining on our deck for other friends who have young children, and in the evenings we host dinner parties for Sam’s new colleagues at the medical school and their wives.

I spend my days back at Jackson Library, starting a research project on the economics of childcare. I want to understand why there is such a dearth of affordable, high-quality group childcare, and I carefully review the mass of congressional hearings in connection with the Comprehensive Child Development Act of 1971.

One day at Jackson I run into an economic historian from MIT who is spending the summer at Stanford. I never had a class with him, but because I was one of only two women in my cohort, the entire MIT economics faculty knows me.

“Myra, what are you doing here? Are you getting another PhD?”

At first I think he’s joking. But then I see he’s genuinely perplexed.

“Why would I be getting another PhD? I’m going to start teaching at the GSB in the fall. I’m going to be an assistant professor here.”

“You are? Oh, I see. I mean, that’s great. Yeah. Great. Well, good luck.”

That’s my introduction to the problems I’m about to face. MIT faculty were extremely supportive of me—as long as I was a student. But the idea that I’m now a faculty member at one of the top-ranked business schools in the country is another matter entirely.
